Ceasefire vs Deadly Avenger - Evel Knievel (1998)

I recently watched Scary Movie 2 and was surprised that this Big Beat classic had made it onto the soundtrack of such a mainstream American film.  Then again, perhaps I shouldn't have been - this is such a catchy, energetic track that it was bound to gain recognition outside of clubland.

Starting with an intro that sounds suspiciously like the intro to The Supremes' 1966 hit 'You Keep Me Hangin' On', the track builds up nicely with its "Everybody in the house make some noise" hook, along with the crowd noise and horn sound that give the impression of a live performance.

Your appetite for beats sufficiently whetted, a bit of scratching at 50s heralds the drop.  From then on in, 'Evel Knievel' is on fire with breaks, bass, ragga-esque vocals and that great guitar riff that so aptly conjures up images of the track's namesake, legendary 70s stuntman motorcyclist Evel Knievel.

Unfortunately this release (which included the B-Side 'Caipirinha') was the only collaboration between Deadly Avenger and the trio Ceasefire (of which Meat Katie was a member), two acts whose music drew especially on cinematic influences.  If you like this track though, you should also check out Ceasefire's 'Trickshot' and Deadly Avenger's remix of the 'Get Carter Theme'.

Shades of Rhythm - Sounds of Eden

If you like this track, you might be interested to see footage of it being performed at a live PA from Shades of Rhythm at one of the legendary Rez events in Newcastle - you can really get a sense of what the early '90s UK rave scene was all about from the clip.
